In the beginning of the movie, Penelope is giving birth to Odysseuss child, Telemachus. Later, the kings Agamemnon and Menalayes force Odysseus to leave Ithica for war against the Trojans. He was going to take his bow with him on his journey, however his mother told him to keep it in Ithica so when he comes back home he will show his son how to use it. Before leaving home, Odysseus prays to Athena to help him through this war. Then he has his last talk with his wife, Penelope. He makes her promise him that if he dies and does not return by the time Telemachus has a beard, she must marry another.
As Odysseus is sailing towards Troy, Athena comes to him and says that he must defeat the Trojans and that he must be strong.
After seven years of war, Hector (the leader of Troy) gets killed. The Trojans won the war leaving all of Odysseuss men wanting to surrender. Odysseus had a plan and convinced everyone that there is a way to win. Here is the plan: One of Odysseuss men gave a gift to the Trojans, a horse. Inside the horse were the men of Ithica. As soon as the horse got inside the city and the enemy was asleep, Odysseus and his men exited the horse and attacked. They have now conquered Troy.
Poseidon, the god of seas, tells Odysseus that he has helped him defeat the Trojans. Odysseus disagrees, saying that it is only he who has conquered Troy. Because Odysseus has not realized that what he has accomplished is by the help of the gods, Poseidons goal is to make Odysseus suffer. The first sign of Poseidons revenge is by the fog that he puts out as Odysseus is out to sail.
The men later find land and settle in a nearby cave. Little did they know that it was the cave of Poseidons son, the Cyclops. He enters his cave and closes the entrance with a big stone. The Cyclops asks who Odysseus was. Odysseus replied, Im nobody. Odysseus had a plan. Him and his men got him drunk. Once he fell asleep, they carved wood into a sharp spear and poked it into his eye blinding him. As he screams for help, Nobody has blinded me!, he moves the stone letting all the men escape. However, a few of them get eaten by the Cyclops.
Odysseus and his men set sail once again and find another land. This land belonged to the God of Wind who happens to be the cousin of Poseidon. This god helps Odysseus with the revenge of Poseidon. He collects wind in a sac to help Odysseus find his way home but warns him that he may only open it at a certain time.
Question: why is he helping Odysseus?
Answer: Because hes the only mortal that uses his mind and knows theres always something to learn from an experience.
While on their way to Ithica, one of the men is curious to know what is inside the sac. Odysseus would not let him and didnt tell him whats in the sac until they arrive.
Suddenly, Odysseuss mom and Penelope sense Odysseuss presense.
As Odysseus was asleep, the men open the sac of wind and are left stranded on an island. A few men go to find food on the island. Odysseus and some of the crew find a pig. One of the crew members tell them to stop chasing it because he is one of their man that has been turned into a pig by the witch of the island. Odysseus goes alone to find the witch.
As Odysseus is on his way up the mountain to find the witch, Gods messenger comes to give Odysseus advice. He gives him a plant to keep him from the witches spell and says that he must sleep with her for her to leave him alone and undo the spell that she cast upon his men. Odysseus does as he the messenger has told him and sleeps with the witch.
Anticlea, Odysseuss mother, goes to the sea and commits suicide because she is sick of waiting for her sons return.
Odysseus stays at the witchs house for five days. Since she is immortal, she turned these five days into five years. Now Odysseuss ship is under five years of tide. She tells him that the only way to go home is to go to the underworld.
Penelope is ready to receive gifts from the men that ask her hand in marriage. Telemachus is truly angry and does not want to do so. Penelope does not accept to marry the men until she is sure that Odysseus will not return.
The man in the underworld shows him the way to Ithica.
As they leave the underworld, they pass a cave that consists of a three-headed monster that tries to kill them. However, most of the men escape thinking they will leave the cave safely. Once they see light, the ship tips over and most of the men fall off the ship and lands in a monsters mouth. Luckily, Odysseus survives but the boat has been eaten as well. He finds Calypsos island and swims to it.
In the mean time, Telemachus tries to get a ship to search for his dad. While Odysseus is bathing in Calypsos island, he finds a ship in the ocean and tries to swim to it. Calypsos maids go after him to get him back to the island. Gods messenger forces Calypso to set Odysseus free. Calypso obeyed the messengers orders and let Odysseus continue his journey and build a ship. Before he leaves, she tells him that if he wishes to stay with her, she will make him immortal.
Telemachus reaches Sparta and somebody tells him that his father is dead. Therefore, he goes back home.
While Odysseus was sailing, Poseidon brought up large waves as part of his revenge. Odysseus, still alive, reaches the land of Fayeesia (land of Fishermen). Once the people find out that he is king Odysseus, they are honored and help him by giving him the best ship they have.
Odysseus lands on Ithica and sees his son, Telemachus. Athena turns him into a beggar in order to go home and check if his wife has kept her promise or loved another. That night, he speaks to Penelope as the beggar. He tells her that Odysseus is here and she says, if only that were true.
The next day, Penelope has to decide who she will marry because Telemachus has grown his first beard. There was a contest. Who will be able to string Odysseuss bow and aim it into the twelve lined up axes. Only Odysseus knows how to do so. All the men fail to succeed at even stringing the bow. Odysseus, disguised as the beggar, stands up and strings the bow and shoots it into the twelve axes. As he does this, he turns back into himself. Him and Telemachus kill all the suitors because they tried to take over his life. After the room is cleaned, Telemachus tells Penelop that Odysseus is alive. As she runs looking for him, she finds Athena who then shows her the way to Odysseus. They make love, and live happily ever after.
